DESCRIPTION:Although born and raised as Hugh Holmes of Boston\, Mass.\, the emanations from his harmonica and vocals make it clear that Professor Harp has the blues of Texas and the whole wide Delta coursing through his veins. \nThe Professor was a rock ‘n’ roll drummer until ’69\, when the Boston blues revival and a sterling performance he caught of blues harmonica great George Allen ‘Harmonica’ Smith\, combined to lure him away from drums and into a full court press on the blues harp. “Undaunted!” he brags\, by the vicissitudes of his life as blues man\, front man\, every kind of man\, Professor Harp puts forth his commanding presence and exceptional talent\, night after night. \n \nPhoto by Anne-Marie Beck \n\nPrimarily playing a sparse\, yet full-sounding brand of no-nonsense\, no-frills Texas style blues\, Professor Harp specializes in what he calls\, ‘roots music’. “It’s whatever makes me feel good and moves me\, so to speak.” Indeed it has evolved while continuing to move audiences for decades. \nUnder the influence of many diverse blues greats\, Professor Harp has developed a robust playing style. He often utilizes the Leslie rotating-speaker sound system to give his harp a Hammond organ timbre\, while he alternately and simultaneously employs the standard or traditional ‘electrified’ blues harp. The Professor tops this off by singing the blues with an infectious fervor\, supported at his strictest insistence by only top-flight musicians on guitar\, bass\, and drums. \n \nPhoto by Michael Baumann \n\nProfessor Harp performed with various bands throughout the Northeast including legends Solomon Burke and Luther ‘Guitar Jr.’ Johnson and played live on NBC’s Today Show. Among the legions of hot performances at rocking blues clubs\, the memories that often stand out for The Professor are the nights his harp helped to swell the room\, in a spontaneous jam with his old mentor\, the inimitable bluesman Muddy Waters. \nIt was the spring of ’75 when a friend first introduced Hugh to Muddy Waters. Following his friend backstage at Boston’s Paul’s Mall\, he found Muddy immersed in a game of Casino with bassist Calvin \n \nPhoto by Michael Baumann \n\nJones.Muddy was unresponsive when it was suggested that Hughie Holmes should sit in on a few numbers. Holmes and his friend backed off. \n \nPhoto by Peter Jordan \n\nYet\, halfway through his show Muddy stopped and asked where that harp player was. The Professor was ready. Overcoming the sudden burning in his ears\, Harp climbed on stage and miraculously grabbed exactly the right harmonica from his disorganized bag of harps. As usual he took the time to grease it up with Vaseline\, and still jumped in without slowing down the show for a moment. From that day on Harp had a standing invitation to join in whenever Muddy took the stage. \nHarp says every show with Muddy was a learning experience and he cites Muddy as his greatest teacher. Muddy\, in turn\, called Hugh the professional of the Harp. Solomon Burkecalled him Professor Harmonica Holmes. After two greats anointed him with sobriquets\, Hugh Holmes decided it was time to split the difference and became Professor Harp.

SUMMARY:NEAL & THE VIPERS
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Neal Vitullo of Warren and vocalist/harmonica player Dave Howard of Warwick formed Young Neal & The Vipers in the early 1980s to concentrate on performing the hard-driving Blues-Roots material they’d begun writing together. They quickly became a local sensation and released their first single in 1985. \nThe Vipers’ popularity exploded in the Northeast and they soon became regulars at Manhattan’s prestigious Lone Star Cafe. The band signed with Atlantic Records in 1989. In 1990\, The Vipers had their first international feature in Guitar World and Neal was hailed for his virtuosic playing. The Atlantic deal failed to bear fruit and The Vipers released their first album\, Hooloovoo on Big Noise\, in 1991. It sold an astounding 10\,000 copies. Despite that success\, the band drifted apart. Neal took over the lead vocals and became the sole frontman for the band. In 1993\, Neal released his first album as lead vocalist\, I’m Finally Alone\, on Big Noise. He stepped onto the international stage when he signed with King Snake Records for a four-album run beginning in 1996. The band toured extensively Internationally and all over the U.S. \nDave Howard rejoined the Vipers in 2009 and the group dropped the “Young” from their name. The band’s latest album at the time of their induction\, One Drunken Kiss\, was released in 2018 to international critical acclaim and excellent sales\, and Neal was recognized by Vintage Guitar as one of the finest guitarists of his generation.

DESCRIPTION:The Earl Knightwood Band Is A Seven-Piece Music Group\nIf you love R&B\, New Orleans\, Funk\, Soul\, and the Blue Side of Jazz\, you will love the Earl Knightwood Band. This seven-piece music group has a rich history of professional experience and musical talent. \nThe band started it’s musical journey in 2023 as the supporting rhythm section for the Blue F.O.s. Tim Lindsey\, the band’s founding member\, was the main force that kept the Blue F.O.s active over a span of 35-years. Following Tim’s sudden untimely death in 2023\, four of the core members of the band’s rhythm section decided to discontinue working as the Blue F.O.s.\nGoing forward\, they rebranded the group under it’s new name\, The Earl Knightwood Band. \nThe new band began working on a completely new repertoire featuring vocals\, guitar\, keyboards\, bass guitar and drums.  The group began gaining momentum\, and as a result of their live performances\, their reputation grew exponentially. Eventually\, a few more new musicians had taken an interest\, joined the group\, and expanded the instrumentation and vocals. \nThe current band lineup comprises Ed Vallee (guitar\, vocals)\, Paula Clare (vocals\, harmonica)\, Frank Rapone (vocals\, keyboards)\, Dave McCarthy (bass guitar)\, Bill Lehourites (vocals\, guitar)\, Chris O’Donnell (vocals\, drums)\, and Greg Cambio (saxophones\, percussion). \nUndeniably\, the Earl Knightwood Band brings forth it’s unique stylings and versatility to a new level of excellence that must be heard. These musicians are road tested\, high mileage for sure\, but it’s all highway miles.

DESCRIPTION:When you’re raised singing hymns in church or harmonizing with your family on the front porch\, chances are good you will grow up loving to sing. This description fits local singer-songwriter Michelle Saylors to a tee. \nSaylors\, a native of Sparta\, Tennessee\, hometown of bluegrass legend Lester Flatt\, grew up listening to gospel\, bluegrass and country music\, and she is still moved by that music today. “It still sounds like home to me when I hear it\,” she said. \nComing from a musical family has made all the difference for Saylors. “My oldest brother JR has been playing and singing in church his entire life. My oldest sister and oldest niece are also very talented musically\,” she said. “When I am home in Tennessee\, we all sing old songs and hymns on the porch with lots of instruments and voices. Those are the best memories. There’s nothing like family harmonies.” \nSaylors\, who began piano lessons at age 10\, struggled to read music. “I could learn it by ear much quicker\,” she said. “I continued piano lessons on and off for about five years at my mother’s hope I might be a church piano player.” \n\n. \n\nHer oldest sister had a guitar and a Mel Bay chord book lying around\, and Saylors transitioned to that instrument naturally. “My parents gave me my first Alvarez guitar for high school graduation\,” she said. “I was extremely shy and it took me years to feel comfortable singing solo in front of anyone. I later picked up the mandolin and performed in a little bluegrass trio\, playing churches and local festivals in Tennessee.” \nEventually\, Saylors entered the field of human services and migrated to Rhode Island. Today\, she is an education program coordinator at Newport Hospital and is sometimes asked about offering her music at work-related events. \n“In April\, I played at a celebration of life event at the hospital\, honoring the lives of cancer patients who passed in 2018. This is the third year and I am so honored to be part of something so meaningful with my music. It’s those opportunities that keep me singing\,” she said. \nBalancing a day job with a music career is no easy feat. “I try to limit myself to one to two gigs a month\,” she said. “I have so many hobbies\, like gardening\, golf\, traveling\, kayaking and biking. The music is always playing in my head\, so it’s never far away.” \nWhat does she get out of performing live? \n“I’ve never been one to crave the spotlight or be the center of attention. Performing is something I had to grow into\,” she said. “In my early human services work\, I was given opportunities to be involved in music sessions with folks diagnosed with Autism or other developmental disabilities. I was able to really see how music can impact people emotionally and physically and… just brings people together. This is what prompted me to start performing in hopes that my music would bring something positive to the listener. When I perform\, I hope that people enjoy something in my song selection [and] feel an emotion or reflect on a memory that makes them smile.” \nI have had the pleasure of hearing Saylors perform several times and am always struck by her honest and sincere presentation of each song. Her smooth voice\, with just a hint of her Tennessee accent\, instantly draws in her audience.

Putting a new spin on classic tunes such as instrumental versions of “Paperback Writer” and “Be My Baby”\, in their live performances\, they are also focused on writing original songs in this classic style of music and are always adding new material to keep the shows fresh and entertaining for audience. The TeleDynes have released their first all original album in May 2018. Comprised of vocal and instrumental tracks and backed by a rockin’ horn section that kick up these high energy tunes.
